   Herbert James Draper (November 1863 (or 1864) – 22 September 1920) was an English Classicist painter whose career began in the Victorian era and extended through the first two decades of the 20th century.Classical trained at the Royal Academy of Art, Draper was a famous and well -known portrait painter. In later years as the public tastes changed and the nude dominated mythological scenes were less popular, the portraits took over, but faded 
      Draper died at 56 from arteriosclerosis

Vol 5 St Bartholomew's Eve: Illustrated by H J Draper

   The St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in 1572 was a targeted group of assassinations and a wave of Catholic mob violence, directed against the Huguenots (French Calvinist Protestants) during the French Wars of Religion. The massacre also marked a turning point in the French Wars of Religion. The Huguenot political movement was crippled by the loss of many of its prominent aristocratic leaders.

 (G. A. HENTY (1832 - 1902) published 1893):
"It is difficult, in these days of religious toleration, to understand why men should, three centuries ago, have flown at each others' throats in the name of the Almighty; still less how, in cold blood, they could have perpetrated hideous massacres of men, women, and children. The Huguenot wars were, however, as much political as religious. Philip of Spain, at that time the most powerful potentate of Europe, desired to add France to the countries where his influence was all powerful; and in the ambitious house of Guise he found ready instruments.It gave colour to the assertions of the Guises and their friends that the movement was a political one, and that the Protestants intended to grasp all power, and to overthrow the throne of France. It also afforded an excuse for the cruel persecutions which followed, and rallied to the Catholic cause numbers of those who were, at heart, indifferent to the question of religion, but were Royalists rather than Catholics.
I have not considered it necessary to devote any large portion of my story to details of the terrible massacres of the period, nor to the atrocious persecutions to which the Huguenots were subjected; but have, as usual, gone to the military events of the struggle for its chief interest. For the particulars of these, I have relied chiefly upon the collection of works of contemporary authors published by Monsieur Zeller, of Paris; the Memoirs of Francois de la Noue, and other French authorities"

Godward established a reputation for his paintings of young women in a classical setting. His ability to convey with technical mastery the feel of contrasting textures, flesh, marble, fur and fabrics set him apart

      William Morris Hunt (March 31, 1824 – September 8, 1879), American painter, was born at Brattleboro, Vermont, to Jane Maria (Leavitt) Hunt and Hon. Jonathan Hunt. Raised as one of the preeminent artist in American art, which started with an education in Paris France, where he learned the principles of the Barbizon school of art. William Morris Hunt was the leading painter of mid-19th-century Boston, Massachusetts.

      Hunt painted his most handsome canvases, all reminiscent of his life in France many included within 'William Morris Hunt'. It became a society fashion to sit for William Hunt, and prominent citizen are among the list. American landscapes round out the collection represented in this title. The Niagara prints were among the last of his completed art projects
